Xiyue Wang

Princeton Ph.D. student Xiyue Wang has been released! Xiyue's family, friends, and community are overjoyed at his return. His freedom is a victory for human rights and academic inquiry.

Xiyue Wang is a Princeton Ph.D. student in history who was wrongfully imprisoned in Iran from August 2016 to December 2019. The news of his detention only became public in July 2017. Wang was conducting research for his dissertation on late 19th and early 20th century Eurasian history. This website has been organized by his friends and colleagues as a source of information on his case and in support of his release. He has a wife and young son who, until December 2019, had not seen him for over three years.

"Our family is complete once again. Our son Shaofan and I have waited three long years for this day and it’s hard to express in words how excited we are to be reunited with Xiyue. We are thankful to everyone who helped make this happen."

- Hua Qu, wife of Xiyue Wang

“Three years ago, on May 1, 2016, Xiyue left home and arrived in Tehran for his Ph. D. dissertation research. He has been held at Evin Prison for nearly 1000 days. He is a scholar, a husband and father, not a spy. It’s time for him to come home.”
